Democrats complete the election sweep

It has been now confirmed that Democrat Jim Webb has won the contested Virginia Senate seat over Republican incumbent George Allen, giving the Democrats the 51-49 Senate majority. This was the last Senate seat to be decided that left the balance of power hanging for the Senate majority but Webb appears to have prevailed by about a 7200 vote margin of the 2 plus million votes cast. Along with the Senate, the Democrats won by a 28 seat margin to also take control of the House of Representatives. Last night was a historic election as red states and Christian conservatives broke their Republican ranks to join the majority of Americans voicing their displeasure with President Bush, the war in Iraq, corruption, and government spending. Losing control of both houses of congress leaves President Bush a lame duck president for his last 2 term years and forces him to have to compromise (something he is not well known for) to pass any future legislation that usually was passed in the name of the "War on Terror".
Also making the 2006 election a historic night was that since the Democrats won the House, that makes Rep Nancy Pelosi of CA the first woman ever to become elected as Speaker of the House, the 3rd most powerful office in government. The current 101st Congress was often dubbed as the "Do Nothing Congress" and regarded as one of the worst ever. It was refreshing to see Democracy in action and see the people vote for new leadership and a new direction. We will have to wait and see if the Democrats live up to the expectations as they look to the 2008 presidential election.

Arizona Cardinals choke once again!

Was it just me or were the Arizona Cardinals doing everything they possibly could to lose that game tonight?? They were up 23-3 with a min left in the 3rd quarter on the Chicago Bears and then gave up 21 consecutive points to lose the game on a missed field goal. What makes it even worse is that the Bears offense didn't even score any of the 3 touchdowns, it was their defense and special teams that won the game for them.
If I can find it I'll post the Dennis Green after-game interview where he blows up, it was pretty funny. Two weeks in a row now for the Cardinals of leading by 14 points and losing in the last minutes of a game. Gotta be tough to be a Cardinals fan right now. It's not all bad though, Matt Leinart had a great game and they do have the Raiders next.

CBGB closes its doors for the last time

Sad day yesterday for fans of punk rock as CBGB played it's final show after a 33 year long run with a farewell show headlined by long time club regular Patti Smith. CBGB & OMFUG who many music fans consider a musical and cultural landmark is best known for launching the careers of bands like The Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie.

The small 350 capacity club was first opened up by owner Hilly Kristal back in 1973 and was originally intended to be a small Country, Bluegrass and Blues club but then later became best known as the birthplace of American punk rock as many unsigned bands would play and draw exposure and small fan followings just by playing at CBGB's. After years legal battles with the landlord and no more extensions or celebrity protests left, the club has finally closed it's doors for good. There is talk of the owner moving the original pieces of the CBGB and resurrect the famous club in Las Vegas, however I doubt that could even come close to what the original club ment to the fans and artists that got their start there.

Patti Smith closed the show with her version of the classic song "Gloria," causing the crowd to appropriately shout "Hey Ho. Lets go!

Paris Hilton gets punched in the face!

I loved hearing the news report about Paris Hilton getting punched in the face by Shanna Moakler, the soon to be ex wife of Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker. Apparently early Wednesday morning at the hip celebrity club Hyde in L.A. Moaker apparently saw Paris at the club and snapped after having learned about Hilton hooking up with her ex Travis Barker and decked her square in the jaw. Paris and Shanna left separately according to TMZ.com and both filed police reports. Moakler claims Paris' ex was there and bent her wrist back and pushed her down some stairs after the altercation with Paris.
Good luck finding a judge to find someone guilty of punching out Paris...I think we all would if we could.

MLB playoff matchups are finally set

It took the last day of the season to decided two division titles and both wildcard winners but the match ups have now been set. The sagging Detroit Tigers who for most of the season held the best record in baseball and the division lead for the just about the entire season lost it by losing in 12 innings to the lowly Royals 10-8 to settle for the American League Wildcard spot and a date with the New York Yankees. The Minnesota Twins win today combined with the Tigers loss gave them the American League Central crown on the last day of the season and will host the Oakland A's the AL West champs.

Over in the National League the two hottest teams The L.A. Dodgers and San Diego Padres closed the season out with matching 88-74 records but the Padres come out having a better head to head record against the Dodgers so they are the N.L. West winners and will host the slumping St. Louis Cardinals who managed to fend off the surging Houston Astros. The Wildcard Dodgers then will travel to New York to host the Mets who clinched their division a while back but also seem to be slumping a little as of late.

So the American League series gets started on Tuesday while the National League matchups open up on Wednesday. My predictions for these match ups are starting with the American League. I'm going to pick the Twins to beat out the A's Johan Santana being a big reason for that and the Yankees taking out the Tigers. The Tigers are limping into the playoffs without much post season experience and that Yankee line up is just ridiculous. In the National League I'm gonna say the Padres come out on top against the Cardinals and then Dodgers to take out the Mets as they have the much better pitching staff in my opinion. We'll see if my picks hold true...

For the past 6 or so years every player featured on the cover of EA's John Madden has suffered a significant injury that same season, and this season is no different. Last years MVP running back Shaun Alexander is now out with a broken bone in his foot after being the latest player to be featured on the video game cover.
My advice, whatever you do next year do not draft the player featured on the Madden cover in your fantasy draft no matter how good that player is!

The much anticipated new series Heroes debuted tonight on NBC. The show's very cool premise is about ordinary people finding out they have unordinary powers. Tonight's premiere was basically just an introduction to some the characters are and what their powers are. A high school cheerleader who cannot be killed or hurt, a painter who paints future events but can't remember actually painting them, a teleporter and brothers who can fly are just some of the powers featured. I liked this show and thought it had a very cool X-men type feel to it. I would recommend checking this show out if you didn't catch it.

The Saints March On!

With their emotional homecoming since Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Saints breathed life and football back into the Big Easy. Before a packed sellout crowd at the Louisiana Superdome, the 3-0 Saints put on an impressive display with their Defense and Special Teams who both came up big tonight to easily defeat the Atlanta Falcons 23-3. Michael Vick, who had previously rushed for 175 yards combined in the first two games of the season was held to just 57 yards rushing and a dismal 12/31 for 137 yards passing.

The Saints running high on emotions scored right of the bat by blocking a Falcon punt and running it back for a touchdown just 90 seconds into the first quarter. That quick score got the crowd fired up even more and the Saints never looked back leading the rest of the game.

It was good to root for the city of New Orleans and to see the city having something to cheer for again after all of the devastation the city has gone through and continues to this day. It was easy to see just how much having a football team means to this city and to think there was talk just a couple of years ago about moving this franchise to Los Angeles. With this victory the Saints improve to 3-0, their best start since 1998

Chargers continue to dominate

The San Diego Chargers continued their dominating display in week two by routing the Tennessee Titans 40-7. The Chargers actually were very close to getting their second consecutive shutout until Titan QB Vince Young threw a TD pass with about 3 minutes left in the game. Yes I know these are the Titans but the Chargers dominated every aspect of the game from defense to 1st downs to time of possession. The Charger defense seemed to hold the Titans to 3 and outs for the entire first half. Titans starting QB Kerry Collins was his usual ineffective self and was eventually replaced by Vince Young but by that time the game was already out of reach for the Titans.
LaDainian Tomlinson had 2 rushing TD's and ever-improving QB Philip Rivers was 25/35 for 235 yard passing with one TD. On the defensive end Shawne "Light Outs" Merriman and Quentin Jammer both contributed with interceptions.
The Chargers have a bye week next week then travel to Baltimore then host the Steelers in week 5. If the Chargers can overcome these two tough opponents they can then pretty much cement themselves in as one of the elite teams to beat in the AFC.

Giant Comeback

In what turned out to be the NFL game of the week, The New York Giants pulled out a thrilling come from behind overtime win against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite trailing 24-7 in the 4th quarter and QB Eli Manning being sacked 8 times, the Giants scored 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to force overtime. Then with just a little over 3 min left in overtime Manning bombed a 31 yard pass to Plaxico Burress who found the endzone and secured the 30-24 win.
I'm not really a fan of either team but even I have to admit that was a thrilling come from behind win. The New York Giants now even up their record at 1-1 and will travel to Seattle and take on the 2-0 NFC champion Seahawks.

Francisco Liriano out for the season

Rookie sensation pitcher Francisco Lorraine said he felt something pop in his left elbow in the 3rd inning of the Twins game against the Oakland A's and was forced to leave the game. It is now being reported he is out for the season. That puts a damper on that 1-2 power punch rotation of Santana and Lirano in the playoffs. Even worse with the Twins losing and the White Sox winning things are getting a lot closer in the AL Central. Here's how it looks as of now:

Music fans, not just hip hop fans all can appreciate the lyrics and style that Tupac brought to rap why he is widely considered the best rapper ever.

Ed Norton dazzles in The Illusionist

This movie had been on my radar when I learned it was coming out and I was not disappointed once I saw it. This movie stars Ed Norton and Paul Giamatti, who I consider two of the better actors out there today also it doesn't hurt to have hot ass Jessica Biel co-starring either. Eisenheim, played by Norton is a master magician in the early 20th century Vienna, who leaves to travel the world to improve his craft. When he returns he finds his childhood love Sophie played by Biel engaged to the prince Leopold of Austria played by Rufus Sewell. As Eisenheim and Sophie grow closer and Leopold more and more suspicious he sends his Chief Inspector played by Giamatti to investigate Eisenheim's relationship with Sophie as well as how he performs his stunning illusions.

This film gives give big budget actors with a classic indie type feel to it. The acting is very good particularly the exchanges between Norton and Giamatti and some of the illusions are pretty good. I would recommend seeing this film why its still in theaters or at the very least catching it when it comes out on DVD. It's good to see films can still come out of Hollywood that center around the characters and acting rather than the special effects.

Other films coming out that look pretty good are Hollywoodland, The Black Dahlia, The Departed and of course Jackass Two!! can't wait!

Monday Night Football

Chargers pound the Raiders in their Monday Night Opener! 27-0

Ok so I wasn't gonna comment on week 1 just yet and kind of let the whole week settle in first, but I couldn't resist commenting on this second game of the Monday Night Football double header. Especially when it involves the Raiders getting beat down on their nationally televised season opener against their division rival San Diego Chargers.

The Raiders looked absolutely horrible tonight, like they didn't even bother to show up to play. If I had to point fingers on what went wrong for them I would start with that awful performance by the offensive line which was just that offensive! Yeah I know Robert Gallery is playing a out of his normal position and has moved over to left tackle, but he was just embarrassed by Shawn Merriman like he had no business matching up with him. In fact the Raiders had no answers for him as he ran wild with 3 sacks and overall the Chargers had 7 as a team. Add in a 131 rushing yards by LaDainian Tomlinson and a supprisingly efficient game by first year starter Philip Rivers and you come up with an overall dominating performance by the San Diego Chargers.

Wasn't Art Shell brought back to the Raiders to bring back that Commitment to Excellence of the past? It's a shame his first game back is a shutout loss at home on Monday Night. So this begs the question: Are the Chargers that good? Or are the Raiders that bad? Time will tell but personally I think it's a little bit of both.

Lets take some time out today to remember the victims of this terrible tradgedy and have our thoughts go out to the families who lost loved ones. Almost everyday in the news we are now reminded of how our country's security has changed since the attacks. Lets not let our government waver on the pursuit of these individuals who are responsible for this vicious attack and bring them to justice.

Tool Rocks the Staples Center

Got to see Tool perform last Thursday before a packed house at Staples. The show absolutely rocked and the crowd seemed to be into it the whole time. They played a lot of cuts from the new album 10, 000 days but also some older songs as well. In particular the songs Vicarious and the closing song Animea really stood out and the crowd really seemed responsive to them. I've been saying for a long time that Tool has each of the best bassists and drummers around and that is still a statement I stand by.
I you have never seen Tool live you are missing out. I strongly recommend catching them the next time they come around.

Looks who's back on top in the east...the New York Yankees!
With the addition on Bobby Abreu, the Yankees look to go deep in the playoffs as the bating order is stacked top to bottom and the pitching seems to be turning around.
Meanwhile the Red Sox have suffered multiple injuries, most recently their captain Varitek has been sidelined for at least a month with torn knee ligaments.
With the Yankees poised to get a couple of their big guns back (Sheffield and Matsui) don't be supprise to see this team in October.

WTF is Isiah doing??

Ok, so no one thought the Knicks would pull a miracle trade during the draft and become a better team overnight, but Knick fans did expect something to happen.

Instead we get the latest blunder by GM Isiah (Train Wreck) Thomas. With 2 first round picks in this year's NBA draft (would have been 3 except Thomas traded this years overall second pick to the Chicago Bulls for center Eddie Curry) Isiah picked Renaldo Balkman a 6-8 forward from South Carolina. Balkman, projected by most top NBA analysts to be a mid-late second round pick was instead picked 20th overall by Thomas. This left Draft analysts and hometown Knick fans in attendace in disbelief. At number 20 highly touted guards Marcus Williams and Jordan Farmar were still available. If Balkman was the top choice for Thomas, why was he chosen as the first pick at number 20? It's not as if he would have not been available nine picks later at 29. Balkman although he was named NIT player of the year was not on most team's radar. Balkman himself even said he was surprised he went in the first round. This continues to prove without a doubt that Thomas has no idea what the hell he is doing. After the Larry Brown debacle and still having the largest payroll in the league to go with the second worst overall record, this is shaping up to be another long season for Knick fans. The only comfort may be knowing that owner James Dolan is only giving Thomas 1 year to turn the team around or he is gone. By all accounts the chance of this happening seems slim to none.
